29/02/2008
The UN refuge agency-UNHCR estimates that an additional 3,000 refugees from Darfur arrived in Chad last week bringing the total number to over 13,000 Sudanese who have fled the fighting this month.
A UNHCR team says the new arrivals are scattered among 11 locations in the Birak area of Chad.UNHCR Spokesman Ron Redmond says some of the refugees have managed to move further inland away from the volatile border area.
"The insecurity and close proximity to the Sudanese border mean UNHCR cannot establish a camp in the Birak area, but we are trying to provide emergency assistance when our teams can get there. We had planned to make another aid distribution today had our team been able to reach the region."
UNHCR says it is still awaiting approval from the Government of Chad to move the refugees to existing camps.
