Cuba signs human rights treaties
29/02/2008
Cuba signed two human rights treaties at the United Nations.
Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque told a press conference that the signing formalizes and reaffirms Cuba's commitment to the rights protected in both instruments which Cuba has been systematically implementing since 1959.
"The act of signing both covenants responds to a sovereign decision of the Cuban government. Cuba has never acted nor will act under pressure."
Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque says the decision has been taken now that what he describes as "the selected and unjust mandate against Cuba imposed...in the former Human Rights Commission has been clearly defeated."
