Security Council postpones vote on Iran

Britain and France are delaying a UN Security Council vote on new sanctions against Iran until Monday to try and get more support for the resolution.

The two countries co-sponsored the resolution that would impose a third round of sanctions on Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment. The vote was expected on Saturday but council members say they are putting it off to try and get a unanimous vote as was the case in the previous two resolutions.

The representative of Indonesia Ambassador Marti Natalegawa says his country wishes to ensure that the draft resolution is in synergy, in support and complementary to the findings of the International Atomic Energy Agency as reflected in its report.

"...we are looking for that synergy in approach between the IAEA and the Security Council and I must say at this time as we are of today we are yet to be comforted, we are yet to be convinced that more sanctions is the most reasonable way to go at this time."

Four non-permanent members–Indonesia, Libya, South Korea and Vietnam have raised concerns.
