UNIFEM and Avon Partner to End Violence Against Women

A global cosmetics company with a celebrity spokesperson has joined the UN in a partnership to promote women's empowerment and end violence against women. Avon announced its intention to donate one million US dollars to the UNIFEM Trust Fund to end violence against women. The money will be partly raised through the sale of Women's Empowerment Bracelets, and they have enlisted Academy Award winner — and Hollywood's highest paid actress — Reese Witherspoon (photo) to help spread the word.
A Child Rights Advocate Speaks Out for Girls in India
Siranta Sinha is working to ensure India's 420 million children get a shot at the future. Mrs. Sinha, who is with the Mission for the Protection of Child Rights, helps to raise public awareness about children's rights, and to monitor children's access to health care and education. In this interview with UN Radio's Gail Bindley-Taylor Sainte, Mrs. Sinha talks about child marriage and other ongoing problems facing girls in India.

It's the first decade of the 21st century and yet there is still a dearth of women in the technical and scientific fields. Many organizations have begun to network to tackle women's under-representation in these areas, and mathematics and engineering. We hear from two women —one from Niger, the other from Nigeria— who participated in a panel discussion on what can be done during the recent session of the Commission on the Status of Women held at UN headquarters in New York.
