Satellite Data Can Save Lives in Disaster Prone Asia-Pacific

Effectively using information collected by satellites can save lives during natural disasters.

Improving ways of utilizing Earth Satellites data is being discussed in Bangkok by the representatives of 22 Asia-Pacific countries. The region has seen some of the most devastating disasters in human history: over the past decade it was hit by six out of ten deadliest natural catastrophes. The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), which organized the symposium in Bangkok, stresses that relevant and timely information is indispensable in assessing risk, planning mitigation measures and rescue and relief activities. ESCAP works closely with Sentinel Asia, an initiative by Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum, to improve the use of satellite information for disaster management in the region.
