Progress in Achieving Millennium Development Goals Uneven: Ban
24/03/2008
The battle to achieve the Millennium Development Goals is changing our world – though not fast enough.
That's what Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a video message to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations - ASEAN regional roundtable on the promotion and achievement of the millennium goals through education and outreach.
The Secretary-General noted that with just seven years to go till 2015, the global scorecard is mixed with many regions remaining off-track, particularly in Africa:
"South East Asia has fared comparatively better. The number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen. Child mortality rates have declined. Primary school enrolment is high."
Secretary-General Ban says progress has been uneven in the ASEAN region where income disparities have grown, many young children are underweight and the environment is threatened.
