On World TB Day, Secretary-General Calls for Accelerating Fight Against the Disease
24/03/2008
There's been a call for action to stop tuberculosis, a contagious disease which, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says, still kills an appalling 4,000 people a day.
In a message for World TB Day, March 24th, Mr. Ban notes that thanks to a broad coalition of partners working to stop TB, the proportion of people who become ill with the disease is slowly falling. But this progress is not keeping pace with population growth, so more and more people are becoming infected with tuberculosis.
Dr. Marcos Espinal is from the Stop Tuberculosis Partnership, a network of more than 500 international, national and private partners established in the year 2000 to realize the goal of eliminating TB as a public health problem.
"The epidemic is slowing down but it's not enough. It's very modest what we are seeing in terms of decline. …What we need to do is basically to ensure the finding of more and more cases."
The World Health Organization issued a report last week that the detection of new TB cases has fallen by half in recent years.
