UN Mission in CAR and Chad Signs Agreement with Chad on Mission Rules
24/03/2008
The UN Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad has signed a status of mission agreement with the Chadian government.
The document lays out legal guidance for the Mission's work on the territory of Chad. It was signed on Saturday in N'Djamena by the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative, Victor Angelo, and by Chad's Foreign Minister.
The agreement covers the activities of the mission, its funds and property, as well as the safety and security of mission personnel and their privileges and immunities.
Mr. Angelo said in remarks at the signing event that the agreement allows the UN to tackle insecurity in Chad, while also responding to humanitarian needs at camps for refugees and internally displaced people.
The mission was set up by the Security Council last September to help protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid to thousands of people uprooted due to insecurity in the northeast of the CAR and eastern Chad and in the neighbouring Darfur region of Sudan.
