UNHCR Urges Ghana to Stop Forcible Deportation of Liberians

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has called on Ghanaian authorities to cease the further forcible deportation of Liberians.

The deportation follows a five week sit-in demonstration by the Liberians demanding to be resettled to third countries or, that the return grant of $100.00 be increased ten-fold to a $1,000.00 if they are to be returned to their home in Liberia.

UNHCR Spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis says the agency made extensive efforts to promote dialogue and urged the Liberians to express themselves within the confines of Ghanaian law:

"But we regret the deportation of this group of refugees and hope that our ongoing negotiations with the Ghanaian authorities will help resolve the situation of the refugees that are still in detention."

Sixteen Liberians were deported on Sunday – 13 of whom have registered as refugees with UNHCR.

More than 26-thousand Liberians are officially registered as refugees in Ghana.
