25/03/2008
One of the world's largest resettlement operations has started in Nepal.
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says over a hundred refugees from Bhutan left their camps in eastern Nepal for Kathmandu over the weekend and are headed for the United States.
Spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis says a group of countries have got together and offered a large resettlement option to the refugees.
"By the year end over 10-thousand refugees would have been expected to leave for resettlement countries such as US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway. So far a total of 25,000 refugees have registered for resettlement and we have submitted over 12,000 of those names to resettlement countries mostly to the US."
More than 100-thousand refugees from Bhutan are living in seven camps in eastern Nepal.
